The standard deviation (σ) measures the spread of individual data points within a population. The standard error of the mean (SEM) measures the spread of sample means around the population mean. The SEM is calculated by dividing the standard deviation by the square root of the sample size. Therefore, the SEM is always smaller than the standard deviation.
