There are two types of trait, recessive and dominant.
A phenotype is an individual's observable trait and the genetic contribution to the phenotype is called the genotype which consists of two copies of the allele.
Recessive trait needs two copies of same the allele to express itself whereas dominant trait need only one allele to express itself.
Dominant trait can exist in homozygous or heterozygous form but when in heterozygous pair it will masks the presence of other recessive allele resulting in phenotype of dominant allele/trait.
